Aggravated Assault 2002 |
An aggravated assault is an unlawful attack by one person upon another
for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury. This
type of assault is usually accompanied by the use of a weapon or by
means likely to produce death or great bodily harm. Attempts are
included since it is not necessary that an injury result when a gun,
knife, or other weapon is used which could and probably would result in
serious personal injury if the crime were successfully completed.

Assault Rate Shows Moderate Increase in 2002 The number of aggravated assaults in 2002 returned to about the same level as it was two years ago, after having fallen to an unusually low number last year. Nevertheless, the city remains above national and regional averages in this category of crime. About 40 percent of the assaults in the city were of a domestic nature, but there is no comparable figure for the nation as a whole. Assaults involving use of a gun, whether fired or threatened, was 8.6%, compared with 18.3% nationwide. (Figures shown are preliminary and unofficial.)
